Some people are surprised when they realize family therapists provide individual psychotherapy too. The distinctive feature of family therapy is its perspective and analytical framework rather than the number of participants present in the therapy room. It’s a framework predicated on the belief that individuals are inseperetable from their relationships.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are trained in a variety of therapeutic approaches, not just those that focus on families as a whole. They have a strong background in understanding how individuals’ behaviors and emotions are shaped by family systems, and this expertise can be beneficial in individual therapy as well.
